Container ready to go out to Proserpine

Proserpine: hire and purchase prices

Locally the demand is mostly cane farming gear, rural property storage, and dry storage for gear that can't sit out in the wet. Hired for a season or bought to keep, it arrives as one quoted price with the truck included, matched to the access you describe.

Guide prices only. The figure you are quoted depends on the delivery address and the stock on hand when you ring — (07) 4944 2211 gets you the actual number.

A mill town with a farm belt around it

Proserpine is the working town of the Whitsundays. Tourism happens on the coast, but the cane fields, the sugar mill, the council offices and a good share of the region's trades are based here. That mix shapes what people want containers for. Growers along the Proserpine River flats need machinery and parts storage. Rural-residential blocks out towards Strathdickie and Kelsey Creek want a lockup that doesn't need a slab and a builder.

The town also services the islands and the resorts. Trades and suppliers who work on the coast often keep their stock and equipment in Proserpine where land is cheaper and access is easier, and a couple of containers on an industrial or rural lot does the job. Graziers further up the valleys towards Lake Proserpine use them for feed, fencing gear and anything that needs to stay out of the weather.

After Cyclone Debbie in 2017, a lot of people across the Whitsundays rethought what their sheds were worth. Many light sheds didn't hold up, and plenty of the replacement storage in the district has been steel containers, sited and anchored with the next cyclone in mind.

River flats, soft ground and the valley roads

The flat country around Proserpine is easy for trucks in the dry and awkward in the wet. Black and alluvial soils on the river flats hold water after heavy rain, and a loaded tilt-tray on soft ground can sink to the axles. If your drop spot is on the flats, a dry spell before delivery makes all the difference. We'd rather move the date than bog a truck in your paddock.

Farm access usually means a gate off a sealed road, a gravel track and a turnaround near the sheds. Check the gate width, because older farm gates can be narrower than a truck, and look for low power lines near the house and the sheds. Out in the valleys, some properties have creek crossings and grids that aren't rated for a loaded truck, so tell us about them before we plan the route.

In town the blocks are generally roomy and flat, and deliveries are straightforward as long as there's a clear run and nothing low overhead.

Siting and tying down in cyclone country

Proserpine sits in a region that has seen severe cyclones, so where and how the container sits matters more than it would further south. Put it on firm, level supports under all four corners, keep it off low ground, and orient it so the doors aren't facing the prevailing weather if you can help it. A loaded container is heavy and stable. A light or empty one on an exposed site should be tied down to ground anchors.

A cargo-worthy container keeps rain out from above, but it will not keep out rising water: floodwater gets in past the seals, and an empty box can float. If your block is near the river or a creek, height matters more than anything else. Our wet season guide covers the details.

Sizes that suit the district

Cane growers usually go for a 40ft for machinery and implements, or pair two 20fts with a roof between them to make a covered work bay. For rural-residential blocks a 20ft is the common choice. It's big enough for a ride-on mower, tools and household overflow, and it travels on a tilt-tray, which suits tighter entrances.

If you're thinking about a farm workshop, a site office or a converted cabin, start with a high cube. There's more on what's realistic in our container homes and cabins guide, including the council side of things in the Whitsunday region.

Buying, hiring and getting it there

Most Proserpine buyers keep their container for years, so buying is the usual route. Cargo-worthy used units are wind and watertight. As-is units are cheaper and are not sold watertight, which is fine for some farm uses but not for anything that has to stay dry. Hire suits jobs with a clear end, such as a house build, a renovation or a seasonal contract. Hire units go out cargo-worthy, wind and watertight. The sales and hire page has the details.

Proserpine deliveries run as part of our regular trips north from Mackay. Freight is quoted with the container so the price you get is the delivered price, and the day is confirmed at order. In the wet, the day also depends on your ground being firm enough to take the truck.

Asked about Proserpine

Do you deliver containers to farms around Proserpine?

Yes, including the cane farms on the river flats and rural blocks out towards Strathdickie and Kelsey Creek. Soft ground after rain is the main risk, so we confirm access and the day at order.

Should a container be tied down in the Whitsundays?

A light or empty container on an exposed site should be anchored to the ground ahead of cyclone season. A loaded container is heavy and stable, but it still needs to sit on firm, level supports.

Can I turn a container into a cabin in the Whitsunday region?

It can be done, but a habitable conversion needs council and building approvals and has to meet the region's wind rating. Start with a high cube and check with Whitsunday Regional Council early.

What does delivery to Proserpine cost?
